Mac Mini 2012 Sound Periodically Discontinued For Short Period

It must be an issue wtih the speakers as it doesn't have any effect on headphones.. Any sound that comes out of it is extremely staticy It happened the first time, but when I turned the sound off and back on again (with F3) it corrected itself.. The only way to get rid of it is to shut down the app that makes it (usually aMSN or Safari) but it may start again soon..
